Rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka became an Academician of the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons
The World Academy of Neurological Surgery (WANS) congress was held recently in Zurich, Switzerland. This authoritative and influential medical organisation was founded 30 years ago by a group of outstanding neurosurgeons from around the world, who are now considered legendary figures in this field of medicine. Today, the academy brings together the most authoritative neurosurgeons from different countries around the world. Starting this year, the rector of UzhNU, Professor Volodymyr Smolanka, has joined the ranks of the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons.
The current congress was combined with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the most outstanding neurosurgeon of the 20th century, Mahmud Ghazi Yashargil (M.G.Yasargil), who passed away in Zurich three weeks before his 100th birthday.

According to established tradition, congress participants discuss issues that have an impact on solving global social and medical problems of our time. Professor V. Smolanka delivered a scientific report at the congress on ‘The paradigm shift in the surgical treatment of epilepsy,’ which presented an innovative approach to treating this disease, developed by scientists from Uzhhorod National University in collaboration with specialists from the Regional Clinical Centre for Neurosurgery and Neurology. The methods proposed in the report have made it possible to radically improve the treatment of this complex pathology, which has an acute social component.
