Cooperation between UzhNU and the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre for People with Disabilities and War Veterans: New Prospects for the Development of Science and Rehabilitation

Uzhhorod National University has signed a cooperation agreement with the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities and War Veterans of the Zakarpattia Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Federation of Sports for Disabled People with Lesions of the Musculoskeletal System, which has become an important step in the development of scientific and practical activities of higher education students, in particular, the speciality 227 Therapy and Rehabilitation.

The cooperation involves the active participation of students in the rehabilitation of people with disabilities, providing practical assistance to war veterans in need of physical and psychological support. This partnership provides an opportunity to interact directly with patients, apply the acquired range of competences in practice and develop professional skills.

In September 2024, the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre launched classes in the discipline ‘Fundamentals of Classical and Alternative Massage’, which allowed future physical therapists to systematically and holistically understand massage techniques and gain the practical experience necessary to work effectively with people who have suffered physical injuries or disorders as a result of hostilities.

The scientific and practical focus of the educational process includes research and development of new rehabilitation methods aimed at improving the quality of life of people with disabilities. Under the guidance of the academic staff of the Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation, Special and Inclusive Education of the Faculty of Health and Physical Education and practitioners, students are involved in research projects that result in the improvement of rehabilitation technologies.

The students have expressed a desire to take part in helping physical therapists as volunteers outside of class time. They help specialists in conducting procedures, organising classes and supporting patients during their recovery. This initiative is of great importance not only for students but also for people in need. Through volunteering, students get a unique opportunity to work side by side with experienced therapists and observe the rehabilitation process at every stage.

In addition to practical skills, higher education students gain life experience, empathy and moral and ethical qualities of a future specialist in the field of therapy and rehabilitation.

The cooperation between the Uzhhorod National University and the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre creates a solid basis for the professional growth of future specialists. It opens up new opportunities to improve the level of medical and social support for people with disabilities and war veterans.

It should be emphasised that higher education students are positively motivated to develop rehabilitation medicine in Ukraine and want to contribute to this field.
