UzhNU initiated the creation of a Debate Club
On 9 April 2025, the first constituent meeting on the occasion of the establishment of the Uzhhorod National University Debate Club was held at the Faculty of History and International Relations at the SVITLO International Educational Centre. The meeting was initiated by Candidate of Political Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of International Studies and Public Communications, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development Anna Melehanych, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Political Science of Public Administration Maryna Soroka, Acting Chairman of the UzhNU Student Council Viktor Pylypchuk and Chairman of the UzhNU Student Scientific Society Anton Radko.
The first meeting of the students, who are eager to learn all the intricacies of the new hobby, was dedicated to the general rules and schemes of debates in the world through the prism of different formats such as the British Parliament or Karl Popper's format. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the fourteen years of experience of holding debates at UzhNU from the permanent curator of this process, Hanna Melehanych. According to Ms. Melehanych, in some years there have been attempts to create debate clubs at UzhNU, but only on the basis of faculties, and the uniqueness of this meeting is that students of all faculties have the opportunity to join the Club, and this is extremely important for gaining a number of competencies for future professionals in all fields. Viktor Pylypchuk, Acting Chairman of the UzhNU Student Council, Anton Radko, Chairman of the UzhNU Student Scientific Society, Victoria Rekita, a student of the Faculty of History and International Relations, and Victoria Dub, a student of the Faculty of Law, also shared their experience of participating in and conducting debates. Each of them focused primarily on thorough preparation before the game, such as detailed study of information on problematic topics, development of oratory skills and critical thinking in detailed rehearsals, and the importance of simply trying to play debate at least once and see what changes it can bring to each and every one of them. They also stressed the importance of creating a clear and atmospheric teamwork in order to learn how to respond to changes in the scenario and schedules of the debate process in theory and practice. The new members of the club were told about future opportunities to participate in local and national tournaments, such as the Europe Day competition and tournaments organised by the NGO ‘Active Community’, where they will be able to prove themselves and develop their rhetorical and oratorical skills.

The first meeting was attended by representatives of seven faculties, including the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of History and International Relations, the Faculty of Information Technologies, the Faculty of Mathematics and Digital Technologies, as well as the Faculties of Philology, Law and Economics. All interested students of UzhNU can join the club. To do this, you need to send an e-mail to the UzhNU Centre for Sustainable Development - dev-center@uzhnu.edu.ua or inform the leaders of the UzhNU Student Council or the UzhNU Student Scientific Society. In addition, the pages of the above-mentioned organisations will publish relevant announcements and news.
