Medical researchers from the University of Nebraska visited UzhNU
On Wednesday, May 27, Uzhhorod National University hosted a delegation from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) of the United States, led by Andrew Patterson, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Accompanying him to our region were doctors and former military personnel who have been assisting Ukraine since the war’s earliest days, primarily in the healthcare sector. They possess extensive experience working with complex cases and under difficult conditions, which they are sharing with our medical professionals and students.

During the meeting, which was attended on the Ukrainian side by Acting Rector of Uzhhorod University Professor Volodymyr Smolanka and Head of the Zakarpattia Regional Military-Civil Administration Myroslav Biletskyi, there was an exchange of views on establishing effective cooperation between medical researchers in Zakarpattia and Nebraska. The guests noted, in particular, that representatives of the University of Nebraska Medical Center collaborate with the Warren Buffett Foundation, which enables them to visit Ukraine to conduct training for students and young doctors, as well as to bring medical equipment needed by our specialists. The partners have already announced a gift for the UzhNU Medical Faculty—a high-tech training simulator for diagnosing and practicing various surgical procedures, which will allow for the improvement of clinical skills and emergency care protocols without risk to real patients.

Discussions also focused on establishing an exchange of practical experience between university specialists, including internships for UzhNU Medical Faculty faculty members at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and lectures by American specialists for students in Uzhhorod. A separate topic of discussion among medical professionals from both universities was the development of telemedicine, which has been actively expanding in recent years.
The American partners plan to make their next visit to Uzhhorod in the fall. Plans include signing a memorandum of understanding between the universities of Nebraska and Uzhhorod and establishing communication with the leaders of the American state. Another promising area of cooperation is providing equipment for the “4.5.0. Recovery Center.”
