UzhNU began to sum up results of the previous year
Year 2016 was very fruitful and eventful for Uzhhorod National University. It was the year of meetings with honorauble guests, conferences, presentations, awards and scientific discoveries. However, a lot of other things happened in the university life last year, namely, the upgrade of material and technical resources, renovations, reconstructions and construction of new objects.
Academic buildings
The long-awaited renovation was done in the main building of UzhNU, namely, on the 5th floor, where repair works were carried out in the premises of the Faculty of Geography and the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
The Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages Mykhailo Roshko said that until recently the fifth floor had been abandoned. "The roof was leaking, we didn’t have any classroom in good condition. From time to time some minor repairs were done, but they did not change the situation dramatically. Our classrooms were furnished with old desks and chairs. The faculty staff and myself as a dean always felt embarrassed for the conditions of the classrooms, in which we had to train the students who chose our faculty, because they were paying relatively high tuition fees and the conditions for study were, unfortunately, unsatisfactory. Our faculty was attractive for applicants in terms of knowledge and diploma, but the premises left much to be desired. Over the last few years there was an incredible breakthrough. At first, the roof was repaired, making it possible to move on. Then, the premises of three departments (English, German and French philology) and the dean’s office were refurbished. I would like to thank the Rector of the university Volodymyr Smolanka for his assistance in the renovation of our faculty, which has a European look now."
In 2016 repairs were also carried out in the building of the Medical Faculty, including the staircase from the first to the third floor, the corridor on the 3rd floor, classrooms №565, 555, 548, 564 and premises of the department of social medicine and hygiene. Classroom renovations were also carried out in the university building in Zankovetska st. 89, at the Faculty of Law, in the Hungarology Center and in the premises of the department of military training located in Tlehasa st. 16.
During the last year, the roofs of the Faculty of Healthcare and the Faculty of Chemistry were completely repaired.
Residential buildings
Important renovations and repairs were carried out in student hostels. Slate roofing of hostel №2 was replaced with a new metal tile roofing. It is planned to renovate the 5th floor of the hostel in 2017. The total cost of the object repairs is 1,341,188 UAH. The roof of hostel №5 was also repaired.
We would also like to mention the overhaul of the sixth and the fifth floors of hostel №4, which was co-financed by the Hungarian partners and the university. A modern sports complex consisting of a football field with artificial turf, volleyball and basketball courts, tennis courts and a playground with exercise equipment was built in cooperation with our Hungarian partners near hostel №4 on the site of the old football field.
In 2016 within the framework of cooperation program between the Vysočina region (Czech Republic) and the Transcarpathian region, 746,763 UAH were spent on replacement of windows in several university buildings.
Totally, 32 diverse repair projects were implemented last year.
The chief engineer of UzhNU Mykhailo Muchychka stresses that another important step, taken last year, was putting into operation a new modular boiler house supplying heating and hot water for hostels № 1,2,3. It allows the university to save about 20 thousand cubic meters of gas, about 25 thousand kW of electricity and about 100 cubic meters of water every month, which equals to about 250 thousand UAH.
While students and teachers are celebrating New Year and Christmas, Uzhhorod National University is summing up the results of the previous year and preparing for fruitful work in a new one.
