Summer University 2023. Day one.
On Monday, 19 June, the Summer University 2023 opened its doors. Thirty-two gifted tenth-graders from different parts of the region will get acquainted with Uzhhorod National University for two weeks. After all, next year they will be faced with the choice of which university to spend their student years. The programme is extremely rich and interesting: acquaintance with the faculties, museums, attendance of trainings, intellectual games, film screenings and excursions to interesting places in Uzhhorod and beyond.
Simultaneously with the Summer University, the Summer School was launched, which is open to students in grades 7-9. The official opening ceremony in the yard of the Uzhhorod Scientific Lyceum brought together about 150 children from Khust, Vynohradiv, Uzhhorod, Chop, Velykyi Luh and other settlements of Zakarpattia, who wanted to spend their holidays as interesting and useful as possible.
The co-organisers of the events are Uzhhorod National University, the Department of Education, Youth and Sports of the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration, Uzhhorod Science Lyceum and IT company EPAM Ukraine.
"Summer Universities" is a unique concept of events implemented by Uzhhorod National University to introduce the university to future school leavers and to make summer holidays rich and useful, which started in 2018. According to Ihor Korol, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, the Summer University has not been held for the past two years due to the pandemic and war. And now, after a two-year pause, the Summer University is happy to welcome talented students again: "In 2018 and 2019, we held Summer Universities for tenth-graders in Uzhhorod. Now we have resumed this tradition, but with a twist - a combination of the Summer School and the Summer University. Last year, the Department of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration launched Summer Schools in various subjects, and this year this initiative has been continued. This is a great opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge of a particular subject and have fun with their friends. This year, as part of this initiative, we are holding Summer Schools in Mathematics and Computer Science, and we are also holding a Summer University. The participants are the winners of regional and national competitions in mathematics, computer science and the Junior Academy of Sciences. The children will be accommodated and fed at the Uzhhorod Science Lyceum, and all activities will be held at UzhNU. During the two weeks, the children will visit all our departments, get acquainted with museums, laboratories, the observatory, and the Botanical Garden. They will also attend lectures, trainings, and round tables. Our teachers and specialists from leading IT companies will be involved in the events. The programme also includes informal communication, discussions, and intellectual games. Participants will visit historical monuments and interesting places both in Uzhhorod and beyond."
So, after the official opening of the Summer University 2023, the students arrived at UzhNU. There, they played a series of intellectual games to get to know each other and the university staff, with whom they will now meet almost every day for 2 weeks.
At the end of the busy day, the students had excursions to the UzhNU History Museum and the Archaeological Museum. Here, the students were able to see the historical and cultural values from the Paleolithic to the late Middle Ages, which have been accumulated over the decades by the UzhNU archaeological expedition. Also, the exhibition hall of the UzhNU Museum of History, which presents the most complete reflection of the history of the emergence, development and modern formation of the university as a leading higher education institution and a recognised research centre.
