Officers of Lithuanian armed forces talked about the experience of their country in joining NATO

Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania in.Uzhhorod, NATO Information Center at Uzhhorod National University, NGO "Transcarathian community" and the public reception of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union held a public international workshop "Ukraine - NATO Partnership: from strategic declarations to the tactics of practical actions" in Uzhhorod.

The moderator of the seminar associate professor of UzhNU Inna Turyanytsya gave the floor to the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Uzhhorod  V. Harapko, Vice-Rector of Uzhhorod National University Ivan Studenyak, first deputy head of the Transcarpathian Regional Council I. Borto and Uzhhorod Deputy Mayor Ivan Tsap, Defence Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania to Ukraine Mindaugas Kviklis, chief of General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre Algirdas Norkus and the Director of the Department for Scientific and Technological Development of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine Dmytro Cheberkus.

Lieutenant colonel M. Kviklis told the history of his country joining NATO. "It was not easy, because there was alien army on our territory, but we understood that we wouldn’t be able to guarantee our safety ourselves. There were lots of discussions and we slowly but firmly moved towards our goal. Today our countries - Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania - have set up a joint military brigade. This new international special detachment is getting ready for its missions, studying European standards under which the main thing is not weapons, but skills and knowledge what to do in a given situation".

Since Ukraine has no clearly defined foreign policy and security strategy, which is unacceptable at war, the interlocutors emphasized that we had to cooperate with NATO and the neighbouring countries members of the alliance.  Interlocutors dwelt on the peculiarities of ATO in Ukraine, threats and security risks for our country.  The war against Ukraine is made not by Putin but by the Russian people, the vast majorities of whom support their leader’s aggressive policy against Ukraine and consider Lenin and Stalin to be their political idols. Therefore, Ukraine should use every opportunity to distance itself from Russia, and strengthen its relations with such powerful security organization as NATO "- said Professor M.Lazarovych.

Colonel Yuriy Belyakov from Uzhhorod who is in the ATO area with the 53rd Mechanized Brigade at present told the workshop participants about the situation in the ATO area with the help of the videoconference. They also got acquainted with the collection of chevrons of different military units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

"Our today's audience actually reproduced the reality. Lithuania is the biggest lobbyist and advocate of Ukraine in EU and NATO. All others only make declarations! Today we’ve received more evidence that civil society has made a big step forward over the past two years. It means that everything will be fine! Glory to Ukraine and everyone who appreciates and defends it! "- said Inna Turyanytsya at the end of the workshop, the participants of which planted a tree of peace in the square in front of the university.
