Modern dentistry: features of training, employment and programmes at UzhNU

The Faculty of Dentistry at Uzhhorod National University has a multifunctional and modern structure, which includes a number of departments. In particular, the following departments work here: therapeutic dentistry, paediatric dentistry, orthopaedic dentistry, surgical dentistry and clinical disciplines, medical and biological disciplines, as well as clinical, laboratory and morphofunctional diagnostics. It also includes the Department of Postgraduate Dentistry, which provides training for specialists in narrow specialities.

The scientific and research work of the Faculty of Dentistry is carried out within the framework of scientific and educational centres:

  • Centre for Implantology and Surgical Dentistry;
  • Scientific and Educational Centre for Forensic Dentistry, Medical Law and Radiology;
  • Educational and Scientific Training Centre for Postgraduate Education of the Faculty of Dentistry of UzhNU;
  • Scientific and Educational Centre for Maxillofacial Surgery and Periodontology;
  • Scientific Research and Educational Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Immunology of Mucous Membranes;
  • Educational and Scientific Centre for Microbiology and Biotechnology.

The faculty's material base is equipped with the latest technologies that meet European standards. This enables students and graduates to obtain a high-quality education and employment prospects abroad.

Thanks to its strong scientific base and international recognition, the department has established itself as a prestigious centre for dental education not only in Ukraine but also abroad.

Find out more about the specialisations and future employment opportunities in our conversation with the dean of the faculty, Professor Yevhen Kostenko.

- What specialisations are offered at your faculty?

- The Faculty of Dentistry consists of two components: undergraduate and postgraduate education. During the first stage, students obtain the qualification of a dentist. They then undergo an internship in the specialisation ‘Dentistry’. After that, they can pursue advanced studies in narrow fields such as paediatric, orthopaedic, therapeutic and surgical dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, periodontology and orthodontics. In fact, these are the fields of study in the postgraduate programme.

These specialisations cover the entire spectrum of dental care, so they cannot be irrelevant. Modern dentistry is not only about treating teeth, but also about digital technologies and aesthetics, which borders on cosmetology. We conduct master classes and thematic improvement courses that meet the needs of modern patients.

In addition, the Faculty of Dentistry at UzhNU has the highest accreditation rating in Ukraine. Another advantage of the department is the unique content of its programmes. The curriculum is standardised in accordance with European standards, in particular those of the Visegrad Four countries and Austria. This opens the door to employment in the EU for our graduates, as confirmed by more than 300 specialists. In addition, the programmes include forensic and digital dentistry. Our educational programmes remain relevant not only in Ukraine but also abroad. There is also the possibility of unifying diplomas with foreign universities.

- Please tell us about the new features of this year's admission campaign at your faculty.

- There have been no changes in this year's admission campaign. The passing score remains 150. This is a certain threshold that applicants must overcome in order to enter the Faculty of Dentistry and begin their journey towards their profession.

- What employment opportunities are available to graduates?

- Dentistry is one of the most practical and resource-intensive specialties. The faculty has its own clinical base, the University Dental Clinic, where students gain practical experience working with modern equipment and real patients under the guidance of practicing teachers. This significantly increases the level of training and competitiveness of our graduates. The faculty cooperates with a wide network of clinics and clinical bases with which it has concluded cooperation agreements.

Of course, the faculty promotes further employment of students. Graduates of the Faculty of Dentistry are employed in domestic and foreign clinics in Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Jordan, Turkey and other countries thanks to the unification of the educational programme with foreign universities.

This year, our graduates have a particularly promising opportunity — an open presentation of their work to stakeholders. In particular, representatives of clinics that need specialists with specific specialisations will be present: paediatric dentists, orthodontists, orthopaedists, surgeons. Employers will meet with interns, review their cases and see them in action. Thus, after completing their studies, students have every chance of immediately receiving job offers.
