Autumn in the botanical garden
If autumn sadness is approaching you step by step, escape is your only salvation, but you don’t have to run away too far, because you can forget about all the worries and enjoy the bright colors of autumn in the botanical garden of Uzhhorod National University. The variety of flowers and trees from around the world can offer not only entertaining but also informative programme.
"The botanical garden of Uzhhorod University has been functioning since 1945, and is located on an area of 4.5 hectares. The garden is divided into several sections with the flora of America, Europe and Asia. The plants growing in the parterre are collected by their decorative value no matter what their origin is. At first, only local plants were planted, but gradually we succeeded in establishing links with other botanical gardens of Ukraine and of the neighbouring countries, and the variety of species increased", - says the head of department of natural flora and dendrology Nadiya Kopynets.
Ms. Kopynets says that the botanical garden receives new specimens owing to exchange. We have been buying fruit-bearing plants from the gardens of Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, USA, China and Japan for many years. Every year there appear new exotic specimens in our botanical garden. However, it can sometimes take several years before we can plant them out. Quarantine inspections check the seeds that come by exchange, and then in 2-3 years they are checked again before being planted in the open ground.
At present, the botanical garden of UzhNU has a collection of over 4 thousand species of plants, that have already been planted in the open ground, and about 2 thousand greenhouse ones. Among them there are many varieties of conifers, including yew, dawn redwood, bald cypress, etc. Decorative flowers are represented in the botanical garden by roses, gladioli, chrysanthemums and lilies. "There is also a flower that belongs to endangered species and is called Colchicum autumnale. This species has almost been destroyed in the Carpathians", - says Ms. Kopynets. Tropical and subtropical plants such as banana, mimosa, laurel, eucalyptus, papaya, palm trees and even cacti are growing in greenhouse of the botanical garden.
In the autumn the garden does not lost its charm, because some of its species adorn the area till the middle of winter and sometimes even longer. The garden has a collection of magnolia trees, which come into bloom in spring, and are covered with beautiful pink fruits in autumn. With the arrival of autumn the tulip tree is decorated with bump like fruits which drop off in late autumn. Cotoneaster is also very visible in the garden for its small red fruits looking like beads and falling off after the first frost.
Autumn is very magical in the botanical garden. Some trees slowly shed their leaves preparing for cold winter, others put on their best colors. It is worth mentioning the botanical garden workers, who do their best to take care of the plants growing in the garden. The botanical garden of UzhNU is the place where different species are collected, where one can see exotic flowers, bushes and mighty trees or just dive into the wonderful world where every element is incredibly important and gives a fantastic impression.
