According to the Regulations on the Institute's activities, the main areas of activity of the Institute are:

• complex development of legal science, coordination, organization of conducting fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of ecclesiastical law and state-church relations;
• consolidation of the intellectual potential of scientific workers of research institutions and academic staff of legal educational institutions, spiritual educational institutions and the organization of scientific research activities in the field of studying state ecclesiastical relations in Ukraine;
• scientific provision for law-making activities of state authorities and administration in the field of freedom of conscience and religion, preparation of practical recommendations for improving the activities of state authorities and local self-government;
•  investigation and generalization of the mechanisms of implementation of acts of legislation in the field of state ecclesiastical law;
• analysis of draft laws in the field of ecclesiastical law and state-church relations in comparison with Western European and American counterparts, generalization of the world experience of legal regulation of social relations in the field of ecclesiastical law;
• dissemination of legal information, formation of legal awareness among citizens, development of legal education;
• development of new directions in the fields of legal science;
• promoting the achievements of legal science and promoting the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of ecclesiastical law and state-church relations.
