Laboratory for molecular genetic research was solemnly opened at the Faculty of Biology
On Thursday, November 2nd 2017, a new laboratory for molecular genetic research was officially opened at the Department of Zoology of the Biological Faculty of Uzhhorod National University. The event was attended by the Rector of the university Volodymyr Smolanka, Vice-rectors Oleksandr Slyvka, Ihor Studenyak, Dmytro Soyma, the dean of the Faculty of Biology Yaroslava Hasynets and the staff of the Department of Zoology.
"An important area of activity of the laboratory is the implementation of a complex scientific topic "The development of genomic approaches for the establishment of the genetic diversity of rare and endemic species of plants and animals" (scientific supervisor Oleksyk T.H.), which involves studying and developing the latest methodology and experimental approaches, as well as creating an information base for the study of genetic diversity in populations of rare plants and animals of the Carpathian region.
"Doing research on the basis of the newly opened laboratory will also enable the scientists of the faculty to participate in international research programs and facilitate the establishment of cooperation with academic institutions and laboratories of other countries. The opening of the laboratory will also allow to attract skilled students to carrying out modern research and improve the process of training the scientific and pedagogical staff of the university," - says Fedir Kurtyak - the head of the Department of Zoology of the Biological Faculty.
The opening of the laboratory for molecular genetic studies is an important step, both for the Faculty of Biology and for the university as a whole. This lab will be a great platform for student education and science development at the faculty. The workers of the department believe that it will be possible to research DNA samples, which is one of the leading directions of modern science.
The obtained results may also be used for medical purposes in the future, in particular for the identification of rare and widespread alleles and hereditary sensitivities to human diseases, with the subsequent formation of an individual approach to prevention and treatment of various diseases and the development of personalized medicine in the region. We hope that in the future it will be possible to carry out genetic diagnostics on the basis of the laboratory," - says the dean of the faculty Yaroslava Hasynets.
