UzhNU solemnly celebrated the Day of Dignity and Liberty!

An exposition "Following the Revolution of Dignity” was opened in the lobby of the main building of Uzhhorod National University today. Photo exhibits depict events from the days of the Ukrainian revolution. Here you can see the photos of bloodstained Mykola and Ihor Kuznetsovs, who were severely beaten during the events in Instytutska street, Vitaliy Klychko in flour and many other pictures that were taken in the last three years.

The celebration on the Day of Dignity and Liberty began with a retrospective journey into the history of Ukrainian independence. The moderator of the event, the chief editor of the periodical  "Myrotvorets” (Peacemaker) Pavlo Homonayl told about the path of Ukraine on the way to its freedom and independence and noted that it was only the beginning of the way.

The Rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka remarked that the Day of Dignity and Liberty of Ukraine was an important public holiday which clearly demonstrated that freedom was hard to gain. "The opening of the exhibition within the walls of our university is symbolic, as students were the driving force of the Revolution. Young people who did not agree with the policy of the state showed their aspirations to Europeans. These people showed the world that freedom existed  and it was worth fighting for." After Rector’s speech, a minute of silence was held to commemorate all the heroes who layed down their lives in maidans across the country and in the ATO area.

"On November 21, 2013 young people came to Maidan in Kyiv. At first, it was unarmed protest caused by the government’s actions. However, Yanukovych's regime showed its brutal face and started to drive off the people who came to defend their rights and freedoms. That is how the Revolution began - the Revolution of Dignity, which was marked with blood and deaths. It should be noted that Ukrainians had to pay a very high price for the victory and Ukrainian authorities should remember those days of modern Ukrainian history,"- said the head of the regional organization “Prosvita" Volodymyr Pipash.

The war in the east continues. The war, that kills the innocent every day, affects us in all its manifestations. Ukrainians should remember those who fight for peaceful sky over their heads. Although the Day of Dignity and Liberty of Ukraine is quite a small holiday, it has a very painful and long history. This is the holiday of the nation that can be proud of its children, who were able to unite for a common future.
