International Family Medicine Conference took place in UzhNU

On April 21-22, 2015 an International scientific and practical conference "Primary health care influence on behavioral determinants of population concerning prevention of socially dangerous and chronic noninfectious diseases in publicly funded and insurance health care systems" took place in UzhNU.

The event was organized by the President of the Association of Family Physicians of Transcarpathia, director of the Research Institute of Family Medicine, the Dean of the Faculty of Postgraduate and Pre-university Education of UzhNU Professor I. Chopey, Rector of UzhNU V. Smolanka, Honorary Doctor of Uzhhorod National University, Professor of Silesian Medical Academy (Poland) A. Siyeron, Honorary Doctor of UzhNU, University Clinic of Magdeburg (Germany) prof. M. Lütke, Head of Healthcare Department of Transcarpathian Regional Administration V. Scryp, director of «Ukrainian Center for control of socially dangerous diseases of the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine" N. Nizova, Deputy of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (VII convocation), a member of the Coordinating Council on Healthcare System Reform in the Transcarpathian region S. Khanenko and others.

The conference was started by a true legend of UzhNU – the male choir "Boyan". They sang the anthem of Ukraine and several other songs.

The plenary meeting was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Postgraduate and Pre-university Education of UzhNU Professor I. Chopey "When reading the announcements of events on the website of UzhNU,  we can see that a lot of other conferences including the international ones are held in UzhNU these days. This is very pleasing. I hope that the current activity will not be held in vain, and together we will make contribution to Ukrainian medicine. We have been joined by scholars not only from Ukraine but also from abroad, particularly from Slovakia, Estonia and other countries. I wish us all fruitful work.”

The head of the regional state administration Vasyl Hubal is convinced that Transcarpathian doctors have much to be proud of "Healthcare industry has very good scientists and doctors, but no attention from the state. At the regional level we are trying to do our best to improve the situation in our town without waiting for instructions from above. We are happy to be attended by guests from abroad today. It's nice that we have good neighbors who are ready to help and do not try to run the show in our country”.

 Conference participants had an opportunity to communicate via Skype with medical faculty graduates working abroad. In particular, Larysa Dobra described the role of family medicine in Holland, where she worked as a doctor. "Dutch patients address their family doctor who examines and if necessary directs a person to the specialist they need. Thus, we save patient’s time and specialized doctors can pay more time to diagnostics and treatment, "- said Larysa.

A graduate of our University Oksana Turyanytsya who had been working in Prague for about 7 years told about medicine in Czech Republic. In particular, she emphasized what examinations had to be taken to get a job abroad.

Our regular partners and colleagues, family physicians from Corvallis, USA Mark Rampton and Laura Gameli were also online. They pointed out several steps that had to be taken for the development of our national medicine:

create a better image of a family physician among citizens;

raise wages, probably even financially encourage intensity and quality of work;

introduce health insurance.

The university Rector Volodymyr Smolanka stressed the expediency of such a conference and the importance of implementation of reforms in primary health care.

After welcoming speeches participants continued to work in different sections: "Problems of socially dangerous diseases in Ukraine and in the world", "General practice as an integrative discipline of health care", "Meeting of the Transcarpathian Association of Family Medicine with rheumatologists of the region".
