Frequently asked questions about Internship in Uzhhorod National University

Frequently asked questions about Internship in Uzhhorod National University

As we mentioned earlier, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine published a 12-month internship program for foreigners in the field of 'General Medical Practice'. The program is developed in accordance with the normative documents of the National Medical Commission (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship) Regulations (New Delhi, India, 2021), the Regulation on the Approval of Doctors in accordance with the Federal Laws (2023, Federal Republic of Germany), the requirements of the medical chambers of the Republic of Poland.

Historically, studying medicine in Ukraine has always been popular among international students. However, opportunities for postgraduate education have been limited, leading to difficulties in the recognition of their education in some countries. For a long time, clinical residency was an alternative to internships for foreign students, but this type of training was canceled a few years ago. Moreover, completing a clinical residency did not grant foreigners the right to work as doctors in Ukraine. Currently, regulators in many countries require a document confirming the right to practice medicine in Ukraine for the recognition of medical education.

Currently, such a document is a medical specialist certificate. According to current legislation, students who have graduated from medical faculties and obtained a medical degree, as well as those who have completed training in clinical residency, can obtain such a certificate (Medical license) only after completing their internship. This is possible through one of two paths.

The first way is a one-cycle internship training. It is held in Ukraine in 24 specialties and lasts from 1 to 3 years. The deadline for submitting documents for admission is July 20, and studies begin on August 1 each year.A mandatory requirement for admission is a certificate confirming a Ukrainian language proficiency level of at least B1 (State exam), issued by the  National Commission on State Language Standards.

The application period runs until September 20, with the training starting on either September 1 or November 1 each year. The training is conducted in English, and the Step-3 exam is not required. More details about the admission requirements and procedures can be found on our website. Essentially, this is the 1st cycle (level) of internship training. After completing it, to pursue one of the 18 medical specialties at our university, you can enter the 2nd cycle (level) of the internship. During this phase, the training will be conducted in Ukrainian according to individual plans and will last 1-2 years, depending on the specialty. At the end of the 2nd cycle (level), the licensing Step-3 exam is taken (exclusively in Ukrainian). We emphasize that admission to the 2nd cycle requires a certificate confirming a Ukrainian language proficiency level of at least B1 (State exam), issued by the National Commission on State Language Standards.

Taking into account the requirements for admission terms, this year you can only enroll in the 1st cycle with English as the language of instruction. At the same time, you have the opportunity to develop your skills and pass the Ukrainian language exam in order to be able to continue your studies in the 2nd cycle of the internship.

Our university offers you a unique offer: if you have enrolled with us for the 1st cycle of internship (General medical practice), you will receive a free Ukrainian language course at the same time.

Considering that this is a new type of postgraduate training, we have prepared explanations and answers to the most frequently asked questions for you.
