Student Research Work

From the first research question to one's own device, digital model or engineering project – at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, students learn to turn interest into results. Together with mentors, they research, experiment and create solutions that make it possible to feel like engineers already during their studies.

Research work is an important component of professional training. It helps to deepen fundamental knowledge, master the latest technologies and independently solve engineering tasks. Student research is connected with the scientific directions of the departments and the practical needs of industry, information technology, instrument making and construction.

Acquaintance with research activity begins during the study of the discipline "Introduction to the Specialty" and gradually deepens in laboratory, course and qualification works. Students learn to work with professional literature, formulate a problem, choose research methods, conduct experiments and substantiate conclusions. During practical trainings, they become acquainted with production processes, perform individual tasks and gain experience in preparing technical documentation in accordance with national and international standards. Observations and questions that arise in this work become the basis for further scientific inquiry.

Students of the "Applied Mechanics" specialty go from a design idea to its material embodiment: they develop drawings of parts, create three-dimensional models in computer-aided design systems and manufacture prototypes using 3D printing. Such work makes it possible to compare the digital model with the real product, evaluate its geometry, check the mutual fitting of parts and, if necessary, improve the design. The combination of engineering graphics, computer modeling and additive technologies develops spatial thinking and helps to understand how the choice of material and manufacturing method affects the final result.

Student design creativity also occupies an important place. The faculty has experience in involving senior students in the work of the student design bureau, where academic knowledge became the basis for their own technical developments. In particular, students of the Department of Instrument Making created a methane and carbon dioxide gas detector and a device for monitoring radiation contamination of food products. These developments were presented at all-Ukrainian and regional scientific and technical exhibitions.

For future builders, the urban environment becomes a space for research. In their works, students address issues of building reconstruction, renewal of social infrastructure and adaptation of existing buildings to the modern needs of communities. Such tasks teach them to combine engineering calculations with assessment of the technical condition of structures, take into account the needs of users and find solutions that are consistent with the surrounding buildings.

Students present their knowledge and developments at competitions of diploma projects, inter-university subject olympiads and all-Ukrainian competitions of student research works. Among the achievements of computer engineering students are victories at various stages of all-Ukrainian olympiads in programming, system programming and computer engineering. Participation in such competitions helps to test one's own strengths, exchange experience and determine directions for further professional growth.

Additional opportunities for development are opened by scientific schools, hackathons and work on startups. Here students learn to combine knowledge from different fields, distribute tasks within a team, work within a limited time and present their ideas. Such experience helps to see the path from a technical idea to a solution whose value is understandable to the future user.

Every year the faculty holds a student scientific conference, at which bachelor's and master's degree applicants present the results of their research. Preparing a report, discussing with colleagues and answering questions develop the ability to express thoughts clearly and defend conclusions with arguments. The best works are recommended for publication in specialized scientific and technical publications, and the experience of first presentations and publications becomes the foundation for further scientific activity.

Research work gives students the opportunity to feel like the author of an idea and responsible for its implementation. When a drawing becomes a part, a calculation is confirmed by experiment, and a proposed solution withstands professional discussion, confidence in one's own abilities appears. It is from such experience that an engineer grows, ready to ask questions, work with complex tasks and create something new.
