We invite you to join the ceremonial opening of the academic year for the new cohort of fellows of the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study

The Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS), based in Berlin, organises the opening of the academic year for the new cohort of fellows in one of the cities of Ukraine every year. This year, Uzhhorod will host the scholars.
On this occasion, VUIAS, together with Uzhhorod University, is organising a multi-day academic programme that includes the ceremonial opening, scholarly discussions and opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and international cooperation.
The fellowship programme provides scholars with time for focused research work, interdisciplinary exchange and international cooperation. The ceremony marks the beginning of the academic year and introduces the researchers and projects that will define its content.
The event will begin with welcoming addresses by representatives of the host university, the German diplomatic mission in Ukraine and the partners through whom the programme is implemented. This will be followed by a presentation of the institute and its new fellows, as well as greetings from a former fellow who currently heads the country's main institution for research funding.
The keynote lecture "Zakarpattia in the Process of Becoming: A Century of Borders, Minorities and Belonging" will be devoted to the region in which the institute operates. Few regions of Europe have changed their state affiliation as often as Zakarpattia. The lecture will address how these changes have affected the identities of its inhabitants. The programme will conclude with a musical performance.
