SDG 7. Affordable and Clean Energy: UzhNU Progress in 2025

In 2025, UzhNU insulated 18,900 m² of façades and technical floors, replaced 6,500 lamps with LEDs, and commissioned a solar power plant with battery storage and a photovoltaic system in a dormitory. In UI GreenMetric, the University’s Energy and Climate Change score rose by 335 points, and UzhNU moved up from 13th to 7th place among Ukrainian HEIs in this category.
Key figures, 2025
| Indicator | Value |
| Electricity consumption | approx. 4.083 million kWh (60% for heating) |
| Façades and technical floors insulated (main academic building, Blocks A–D) | 8,500 + 5,600 m² of façades; 2 × 2,400 m² of technical floors |
| Radiators replaced / thermostatic valves installed | 837 / 837 |
| Lamps replaced with energy-efficient ones | 6,500 |
| Capital repairs under the “Higher Education of Ukraine” project (EIB, NEFCO) | works worth UAH 66.4 million |
| UI GreenMetric, Energy and Climate Change | 1,310 points (+335); 7th in Ukraine |
| THE Impact Rankings 2025, SDG 7 | 801–1000 of 1,181 |
Campus energy efficiency
• In the main academic and laboratory building, 9,600 m of heating pipes were replaced; individual heating substations with automatic control and heat metering were installed in academic buildings and Dormitories No. 4 and 5.
• New windows and doors and wall insulation in Dormitory No. 4 provide thermal comfort for 1,800 students.
• Motion sensors and 80 new light fittings were installed; outdoor lighting at 14 Universytetska Street was reconstructed.
Renewable energy and energy resilience
• A solar power plant with battery storage was commissioned at the Department of Applied Physics (12 Kapitulna Street), as was a photovoltaic system in Dormitory No. 4.
• Through the partnership with the University of Lancashire (UK-Ukraine Twinning, Generators4Ukraine campaign), three energy kits were received and integrated with existing PV stations from the NEFCO project: key buildings now have up to 10 hours of backup power.
• Hybrid inverters with batteries were installed in the library, Dormitory No. 4, Blocks A–D and the server room.
Research
• Two state-funded early-career researchers’ projects on solid electrolytes for renewable energy storage; a fundamental research project on perovskite materials for solar energy was completed.
• Contract research for business: a feasibility study for “green” hydrogen production from solar power plants in Zakarpattia (UAH 570 thousand) and solar-wind electric vehicle charging (UAH 75 thousand).
• The Horizon Europe project Piezo2D is developing microgenerators for local electricity generation; research on materials for renewable energy sources was carried out under the SAIA programme.
