SDG 6. Clean Water and Sanitation: UzhNU Progress in 2025

After the renovation of Dormitory No. 4, its water consumption fell from 5,723 to 2,122 m³ per year (a 63% reduction). In 2025, UzhNU also built a rainwater harvesting system at the Botanical Garden and took the lead in an international project monitoring Carpathian wetlands. In the UI GreenMetric ranking, the University’s water management score rose by 112.5 points.

Campus
• At the Botanical Garden, the rainwater reservoir was overhauled and a rooftop rainwater collection system built; the water is used to irrigate plantings.
• In Dormitory No. 4, utilities and plumbing were replaced under the “Higher Education of Ukraine” project (EIB, NEFCO), which produced the water savings.
• The Technical Operations Department continuously monitors water meters to detect leaks promptly; 88 m of storm sewer and the external sewer network of Dormitory No. 4 were repaired.
• Dormitories No. 2, 3 and 4 have accessible toilets and showers for people with reduced mobility; drinking water reserves have been stocked in all shelters.
Research
• UzhNU leads the Interreg NEXT project WeVaRe (since 1 May 2025) with the Synevyr and Polonyny National Parks and universities in Cluj-Napoca and Žilina: inventory of wetlands, analysis of hydrological regimes and a pollution prevention system.
• Under the SAIA programme, a sensitive method for determining fluorides was developed and fluoride levels were screened in transboundary rivers of Ukraine and Slovakia.
• The “Water-saving solutions…” project, with Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, is preparing catalogues of solutions for retaining rainwater and meltwater in cities and households.
Education and community
• Professional college students visited the wastewater treatment plant in Davydkovo (1 April); the director of Uzhhorod Vodokanal (municipal water utility) gave a lecture for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (18 February).
• The project includes a climate change adaptation education centre at the Botanical Garden (a “green classroom”) for schoolchildren and municipal specialists.
