SDG 13. Climate Action: UzhNU Progress in 2025

In 2025, UzhNU implemented four international projects on climate change adaptation and environmental education under the Interreg NEXT programme (EU grants to UzhNU totalling more than EUR 776 thousand) and joined a new project on climate-resilient agriculture. Thermal modernisation of academic buildings is reducing campus energy consumption; in UI GreenMetric, the Energy and Climate Change score rose by 335 points.

Climate change adaptation
• At the Botanical Garden, the rainwater reservoir was restored as a pilot measure to mitigate the effects of extreme weather in the city; catalogues of climate solutions for cities and households and a master’s programme are being prepared.
• Under the SAIA programme, research was carried out on high-mountain geocomplexes of the Carpathians under climate change using GIS.
Climate education
• EFFUSE-win is building a network of secondary, higher and third-age education institutions for a joint environmental education programme in the Ukraine–Slovakia border region.
• Under ECO SMART, a nature education centre for schoolchildren and students from border regions is being created at UzhNU.
• The Centre for Sustainable Development trained Zakarpattia teachers to teach the concept of sustainable development (March, November), and 41 UzhNU teaching staff completed a course on integrating sustainable development into teaching.
• The Faculty of Biology prepared the report “The Impact of the War on Ukraine’s Ecosystems…” for a project of the Council of Young Scientists under the Ministry of Education and Science.
Policy and partnerships
• During the visit to the Munster Technological University (Ireland, 8–11 July), the UzhNU delegation was accompanied by the Deputy Director of the Ecology Department of the Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration.
• UzhNU is a member of the Baltic University Programme (more than 100 universities from 14 countries), which addresses sustainable development and environmental issues.
