81 years of progress: Uzhhorod University opens a new page

On 18 October 2026, Uzhhorod University marks the 81st anniversary of its founding. Behind this date lie the centuries-old educational traditions of Transcarpathia, generations of teachers and students, the establishment of a powerful academic centre, and a new stage of development that began with the creation of the merged university. From now on, the history of the institution continues at the intersection of two educational traditions united by a common goal: to develop education, science and the intellectual potential of Transcarpathia.
For centuries, Transcarpathia has been a meeting place of cultures, languages, religions and worldviews of Central Europe. The geographical location of the region contributed to the formation of a distinctive educational environment in which various intellectual and cultural influences interacted.
One of the important centres of education was the Jesuit college, founded in Humenné in 1613 and moved to Uzhhorod in 1640. A significant role in the development of education was played by the theological seminary of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy and the teachers' seminary, opened in Uzhhorod in 1794. It is precisely with the activities of the educational institutions of past centuries that the history of the formation of the region's intellectual environment is connected.
The idea of opening a university in Uzhhorod matured back in the 19th century. In 1848–1849, corresponding proposals were raised by representatives of the Transcarpathian intelligentsia, in particular Yozef H urban and Adolf Dobrianskyi. In the interwar period, the aspiration to create a university of their own again became relevant. In 1939, a draft law on the founding of the Ukrainian State University in Khust was prepared, but the Hungarian occupation of the region prevented the realisation of the plan.
The decisive year was 1945. On 18 October, the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Ukraine and the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR adopted a joint resolution "On the Opening of a State University in the City of Uzhhorod". This date is considered the official day of the university's founding. The first were four faculties — history, philology, biology and medicine. In October 1945, preparatory courses began work, and on 1 February 1946, the first 168 students from various cities and villages of Ukraine started their studies. The first rector of the university was Stepan Dobosh.

From the first months of its activity, the institution formed not only an educational but also a scholarly and cultural infrastructure. The scientific library began work, and the foundations were laid for the development of the botanical garden and the zoological museum. Subsequently, new faculties were opened, areas of training expanded, and research activities and student life developed.
With the proclamation of Ukraine's independence, a new period of the university's development began. The institution expanded educational opportunities, opened new specialities, developed research institutes and deepened international cooperation. Over the following decades, natural sciences, humanities, medicine, technical, legal, economic and other areas of training developed.

An important event was the merger in 2013 of Zakarpattia State University. The university continued structural changes and the modernisation of educational programmes, responding to the new needs of society, science and the labour market.
In 2008, on the basis of the Mukachevo Technological Institute and the Mukachevo Humanitarian and Pedagogical Institute, Mukachevo State University was established. It combined technological, economic, pedagogical and humanitarian education, subsequently expanding the training of specialists in the fields of management, tourism, information affairs, psychology, natural sciences, art and other areas. Thus two powerful educational traditions of Transcarpathia were formed — in Uzhhorod and Mukachevo. Each of them has its own history, achievements, teams and academic culture.

In March 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 215-r on the establishment of Uzhhorod University by merging Uzhhorod National University and Mukachevo State University. This decision opens a new stage in the development of higher education in Transcarpathia. The merger is intended to consolidate the educational, scientific, human and infrastructural resources of the two institutions, strengthen their capacity for research, international cooperation and the training of competitive specialists.
On 1 October 2026, the merged Uzhhorod University began a new stage of activity. Its scale is reflected in 21 faculties, 4 educational and research institutes and 3 professional colleges. The total number of students of all levels and fields is 18 462. Behind these figures lie thousands of educational trajectories, research ideas, professional plans and opportunities. At the same time, the merger is not merely a change of organisational structure. It is an opportunity to combine the strengths of two university communities, preserve their identity and traditions, and create new conditions for academic development.

Over 81 years, the university history in Uzhhorod has travelled the path from four faculties and the first 168 students to a large educational and scholarly community that unites various fields of knowledge and works for the development of the region and Ukraine.
The 81st page of history opens as a continuation of the great cause initiated by generations of educators and scholars. It is a history in which respect for the past is combined with responsibility for the future, and the pooling of resources and experience creates new opportunities for Transcarpathia.
Happy 81st anniversary, university! May the new page of your history become a time of significant scientific discoveries, quality education, bold ideas and new achievements — for the sake of people, the region and Ukraine.
