UzhNU occupies the 9th position among Ukrainian universities in the GreenMetric rankings
The results of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which rates educational institutions according to the ctiteria of their environmental commitment and environmental sustainability initiatives, have been published recently. Uzhhorod National University occupies a high 9th position in the ranking among the Ukrainian universities represented in it. It is worth mentioning that UzhNU ranks the 6th according to the indicator of energy conservation.
Uzhhorod National University has been keeping positive dynamics in the GreenMetric ranking for several consecutive years. So, in 2020 it scored the 14th, in 2021 – the 11th. Thus, as we can see, the university has improved its position singnificantly since 2020, and has become one of top 10 universities of Ukraine for the first time
It should be emphasized that the university’s position in the above mentioned ranking is a reflection of the consistent strategy of movement of UzhNU towards achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the result of the project work focusing on energy efficiency, mitigation of consequences of climate change due to the regional level of the carbon footprint, and studying the impact of river pollution on environmental biodiversity. In particular, UzhNU is implementing the following projects "Environment for the future by scientific education" and "New energy solutions in the Carpathian region" within the framework of the EU funded Joint Operational Programme Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020. The university is also involved in the project "Cross-Border Cooperation Smart Energy within the framework of the EU funded Joint Operational Programme Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020, and the project "Support of higher education system in a context of climate change mitigation through regional-level of carbon footprint caused by a product, building and organization " within the Erasmus+ programme.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings was launched in 2010. Its goal is to evaluate quantitatively the efforts of universities accross the globe to support the environmental sustainability of their campuses. The ranking as a whole is based on the conceptual framework of the environment, economy and justice. As noted by the compilers of the ranking, universities play an important role in the joint efforts of stakeholders and communities in the fight against the climate change. By promoting and developing innovations, universities will be able to contribute to energy and water conservation, waste recycling and sustainable transport.
Currently, the ranking includes 1,050 universities from all around the world, including 17 Ukrainian universities.
